For Immediate Release
October 27th, 2022
Vancouver, B.C. –The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame, in association with the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission and Destination Greater Victoria, confirmed today that they will be co-hosting the Annual Summit and General Meeting of the BC Sports Hall, September 14-16, 2023. It will mark the first time in the 57-year history of the BC Sports Hall of Fame society that it will host its AGM on Vancouver Island and only the second time it will be held outside of Greater Vancouver. The Kelowna 2022 Annual Summit held last month in association with the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame was the first-ever outside of Greater Vancouver.
Greater Victoria 2023 will bring together a wide cross-section of sport leaders, advocates and promoters of BC sport history, heritage and culture, including Honoured Members of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame. It will feature a series of special events including the Defining Moments Luncheon powered by Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, community workshops of the BC Sports Hall Network, the Council of Chairs Dinner, Eric Whitehead Inspired Service Awards, community outreach through the Hero in You youth education program and will culminate in the Annual General Meeting.
“We’re delighted with the opportunity to partner with the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame and bring the Annual Summit to Greater Victoria in the fall of 2023,” said Tom Mayenknecht, Chair of the BC Sports Hall of Fame. “On behalf of our Chief Executive Nicholas Cartmell, our management team and entire Board of Trustees, we look forward to working with the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame to make it a special celebration of the power of sport history and a reminder of the currency sport has in honouring the past and inspiring the future. We’re also energized to work with the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission to place the spotlight on the significant events, teams and individuals that have characterized sport history on Vancouver Island, including the successful staging of the XV Commonwealth Games in 1994, one of the truly defining moments in BC sport history.”
The 1994 Commonwealth Games are part of the Defining Moments gallery at the BC Sports Hall of Fame and were celebrated on their 25th anniversary by the BC Sports Hall in 2019, along with the Vancouver Canucks’ run to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994, and the BC Lions’ 1994 Grey Cup triumph over Baltimore. Among the other Defining Moments honoured in recent Annual Summits include the White Towel Power at the 1982 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope in 1980. Last month in Kelowna, the spotlight shone on Nancy Greene’s gold and silver Olympic medals at Grenoble 1968, the Rick Hansen Man-in-Motion World Tour in 1987 and Canada’s historic win over the United States in the final of the Alfred Dunhill Cup at St. Andrew’s, Scotland, in 1994.
“We’re proud of our sport history in Greater Victoria and South Vancouver Island and are honoured to be co-hosts of the Greater Victoria 2023 Annual Summit,” said Doug Jennings, President of the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame. “This will be a fabulous three days of storytelling and tributes to sport history in British Columbia and we look forward to welcoming people from throughout the province, including members of the BC Sports Hall Network, and anyone who believes in the transformational power of sport, excellence and community.”
The Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame – which is hosting its 2022 Induction Dinner this Saturday evening, October 29th, at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Ocean Pointe Resort on the inner harbour in downtown Victoria — is a founding member of the BC Sports Hall Network, the group of more than 40 local, regional and sport-specific halls, museums, galleries and exhibits that operate in communities in all corners of the province.
The BC Sports Hall of Fame will have a presence at the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, just a few days after it unveiled its own Class of 2023 at ANNOUNCEMENT DAY on Tuesday at the BC Sports Hall at BC Place. For access to the Class of 2023 photo gallery, please visit: PHOTOS
