Valerie Jerome, granddaughter of Canada’s first Black Olympian John “Army” Howard, became Canadian senior women’s sprint and long jump champion at 15 and represented Canada at the 1960 Rome Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Pan American Games, winning a bronze medal in the 4×100 m relay. Her brother Harry Jerome set seven world records and earned multiple Olympic, Pan-American, and Commonwealth medals in the 1960s. Off the track, Valerie has been active in politics, conservation, and community service, serving on numerous boards and receiving honors like the 125th Anniversary of Canada Medal and the City of Vancouver Heritage Award.
