Bob Molle wrestled his way to the number one spot in the Canadian national championship’s 100kg freestyle division an amazing total of four times. As one of Canada’s finest freestyle wrestlers, Molle’s career boasts a collection of trophies at both the national and international level. Molle started wrestling in high school and was hooked. The highlight of his career occurred at age 21 when he impressed the judges at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles to take the 100 kg freestyle silver medal home, only eighteen days after back surgery. Of the eighteen national and international events he competed in, he placed in the top-three at 13 of these competitions. In 1984, Bob seized first place in the Olympic trials, and first again at the Italian Invitational. That year, he received the Olympic Champion Award at the Tribute to the Champions.
At home, Molle is a living legend. He has been inducted into the Simon Fraser University’s Hall of Fame, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association (CAWA) Hall of Fame. In 1988, he embarked on a coaching career which earned him two prestigious Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) Coach of the Year titles (1990, 1992).
Outside wrestling, Molle also played football professionally for eight years as an offensive guard for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. With Molle, the Bombers won the coveted Grey Cup twice in 1988 and 1990. After retiring, he competed in triathlons and even the gruelling Canadian Ironman competition.
