Lynn (Kanuka) Williams’ athlete profile in track and field demonstrates an impressive dedication to a sport at the highest levels of competition. Her motto–to put forth your best effort and enjoy what you are doing-–belied her incredible accomplishments and impressive collection of medals.
Kanuka competed in all forms of track and field–from 800 meters to ten kilometers to cross-country races–both indoor and outdoor. Although she is most well-known for her Olympic bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, her most memorable event was her bronze medal performance at the 1989 world cross country championships in Norway, a favourite as cross-country is recognized as the purest, most competitive form of middle distance running. Another of her career highlights was picking up a gold medal for the 3000 meters and a bronze medal for the 1500 meters at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. She was also a six-time Canadian middle distance champion and still owns two Canadian records over 1500 and 5000 meters set in 1985.
Feeling fit, strong, and ready to face any competition was what she enjoyed most during her competitive years. Kanuka has received a long list of awards including the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in 1990, the Premier’s Athletic Award from 1984-89, and membership in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1996.
