Lori Fung began her training in rhythmic gymnastics in 1976, under coach Mall Vesik. Between 1977 and 1984, she won or achieved a high standing in numerous provincial, national, and international events.

Fung won every BC Provincial Championship from 1977 to 1984. She took the Canadian Western Regional Championships from 1981 to 1983. In 1982 and 1983, she won the Canadian National Championships (held in Moncton and Vancouver respectively), and was first overall at the 1983 Invitational meet at Lausanne, Switzerland. She won the Gold Medal in the rhythmic gymnastics event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics (scored 9.7 for the ribbon routine, enabling her to surpass the favored Doina Staiculescu, of Romania). Fung was the first person ever to win this particular event.
